    JPG compression is most useful for photographs and other images with many colors and gradual changes in tone. The format is lossy: the encoder simplifies visual information to reduce bytes. PixelShrink lets you choose that tradeoff locally, then compare the measured output with the original before saving anything.

    The right quality is contextual. A large blog photograph may still look convincing at a moderate setting, while small text, line art, or a product label can show ringing and blur much sooner. Avoid repeatedly saving an already compressed JPEG; each lossy generation can compound artifacts. Keep an original or highest-quality master for future edits.

    Noise, foliage, fabric, and sharp text are harder to compress cleanly than smooth backgrounds, so one quality value will not suit every file.

    Reduce a camera-exported hero image after resizing it to the display dimensions, then check important texture at the final on-page size.

    What JPG quality should I use?

    There is no universal number. Start near 80, inspect the actual image, and lower it only while the visible result remains suitable for its destination.

    Why is the compressed JPG larger?

    The source may already be efficiently encoded, or the selected quality may be higher than its previous save. Keep the smaller original when the new result offers no benefit.

    Does this remove image dimensions?

    No. Compression preserves width and height on this route. Resize first when excessive pixel dimensions are the main source of weight.
