    A practical guide

    Flatten transparency deliberately, not by surprise.

    JPG is widely accepted for photographs, email attachments, office documents, marketplaces, and older publishing systems. Converting a PNG to JPG can be useful when transparency is unnecessary and a photographic image is too heavy as lossless PNG. PixelShrink performs the conversion locally and lets you choose both JPEG quality and the solid color placed behind transparent pixels.

    That background choice is permanent in the downloaded JPG because JPEG cannot store alpha. White is the default, but a page-colored background may prevent a visible box around a logo or cut-out image. For screenshots, diagrams, and small text, lossy JPEG artifacts may outweigh any size saving; compare the processed preview closely before replacing the PNG.

    Text and line art can show artifacts

    JPG is designed for continuous-tone imagery; sharp interface edges and lettering may look cleaner in PNG or WebP.

    Smaller is not automatic

    A simple flat PNG can already be compact. Judge the actual byte result instead of assuming JPEG must win.

    What happens to transparent PNG pixels?

    They are blended onto the background color shown in the control. The default is white, and the final JPG cannot be made transparent again.

    Should I convert a logo to JPG?

    Usually only when the destination requires JPG and a solid background is acceptable. PNG or WebP is often better for logos with transparency and sharp edges.

    Can I get the transparent background back later?

    Not from the JPG alone. Keep the original PNG because flattening removes its alpha information.
